What Is a Crown?

Discreetly re-establishing the function of your smile.

When your tooth becomes cracked, broken, or damaged due to trauma or decay, a dental crown is often the ideal solution. This common restoration offers both functional and cosmetic benefits to your smile.

A dental crown is similar to a cap, which is custom-made to protect your damaged tooth. The crown is created using modern technology by our partner dental lab, Keating Dental Arts. Using tooth-colored materials, your state-of-the-art crown is designed to the desired shape and shade and will fit comfortably onto your tooth.

Our experienced Legacy dentists place the crown in-house and make sure it blends into your smile perfectly. You can feel confident in your new restoration and enjoy a fully functioning smile.

Placing Your Crown

The procedure for placing a dental crown is very simple

Image 1

First, Dr. Campbell will assess your tooth and advise you on whether a crown is an ideal option.

Second, he will clean the area and take impressions of your damaged tooth.

Third, he sends these impressions to our partner lab for design and creation. At this stage, we may place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Fourth, the returned crown is placed over your tooth and bonded into place.

If a crown is urgent or your time is restricted, we may recommend a CEREC® crown. Learn more about these same-day crowns below.

CEREC® One Visit Crowns

Same-day dentistry at its finest!

Using CEREC® dental restorations, you can be in and out of our office with a permanent, all ceramic crown, onlay, or veneer! This is a helpful option for those who have a hectic schedule or need an urgent restoration. Using the latest CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology, we can design, create, and place a crown right here in our office. During the procedure, an optical image is taken of the prepared tooth, and a three-dimensional virtual restoration is designed and sent to our milling machine. The machine creates the crown and your Salt Lake City restorative dentist can place it. Most dental restorative methods require more than one visit to the dentist. With CEREC®, the procedure is done in a single appointment, start to finish.

FAQs

Dental crowns can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or even longer with proper care. However, their lifespan can vary depending on factors such as oral hygiene practices, the material used for the crown, and the location in the mouth

Dental crowns can be made to closely match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. Modern dental materials, such as porcelain or ceramic, offer excellent aesthetic results, making the crown blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth, resulting in a natural-looking appearance.

The process of getting a dental crown is generally not painful as it is performed under local anesthesia to numb the area being treated. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity following the procedure, which usually subsides within a few days.

Yes, once the dental crown is properly placed and any initial sensitivity subsides, you can typically resume eating a normal diet. Dental crowns are designed to be strong and durable, allowing you to bite and chew without major restrictions. However, it's advisable to avoid excessively hard or sticky foods that could potentially damage the crown.

Caring for a dental crown is similar to caring for your natural teeth. It is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine, including brushing twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are also necessary to ensure the longevity of your dental crown.

Recently visited Legacy Dental with a dental emergency. The team got me in same day and the staff was both courteous and professional. The doctor quickly assessed the issue and took me through my options in detail. The staff then helped arrange a follow up meeting with a partner clinic to treat my issue before I left. Thank you so much Legacy team, a very memorable and positive experience.

If you are one of those individuals who are apprehensive about dental procedures like me, this is the best place for you because Dr. Behlke is an incredible Dentist. He replaced several of my old fillings with precision care and my teeth look beautiful. Another plus I really liked is how the office is professional and easy to find.

I went in for Wisdom tooth pain. They had a last minute cancel and I got in there, same day! Which I was extremely thankful for cuz of the intense pain I was experiencing. I was in and out of there, WITH them being able to do the extraction, and X-ray in less than an hour! They were awesome! And! It was a fraction of the cost of what other offices were charging for the procedure. Especially cuz I don’t have insurance. Amazing staff, excellent dentist! 100/100 for me.

I love Legacy! They are everything you need and more. I've needed emergency dental work on a few occasions and they have always gotten me in same day, within the hour most of the time. Every single staff including dentists have been sweet and positive, and have always made me feel comfortable. I avoided going to the dentist most of my life, I just wish I would have known about them sooner.
