Things to consider when choosing a dentist

Choosing a dentist can be as stressful for some as actually going to the dentist. Below are some suggestions about what to consider when selecting a dentist. We’d also suggest asking a friend or relative or the local branch of the Academy of General Dentistry for a recommendation.

Find out how long the dental practice has been in operation.

Ask about the extent of the dentist’s training and clinical experience in performing the specific procedure you require. For example, not all dentists are trained in specific cosmetic dentistry procedures. In addition, certain procedures, such as a veneer, may serve both an aesthetic and functional need.

Ask about the type of emergency care offered. For example, is the dentist available after hours and on weekends?

Inquire about patient comforts, such as pre-medication or nitrous oxide, and amenities such as music or heating pads.

If the dentist does not perform certain procedures ask about his referral process.

Ask about the types of professional dental societies the dentist is affiliated with. Some organizations require dentists to take continuing education classes to keep them up-to-date on the latest procedures and technological advances in the field. Check for societies that require their members to complete ongoing continuing education.

Inquire about the use of dental lasers as an alternative to traditional dental tools such as tooth drilling and scalpels.

Before committing yourself to a dentist, identify all the procedure options that would solve your cosmetic dental concern. Ask about the pros and cons of each option.
Is the dental team friendly and courteous? You may not want to see a dentist long term if you don’t feel comfortable with the dentist’s team.
Determine dental costs before treatment. Dental cost totals should include procedure fees, anesthesia fees, and facility fees. If you have dental insurance, the chances are good that there will be some benefit coverage applicable to specific procedures.

"Do you accept my dental insurance?"

That’s a good question. The answer is, “Probably.” There are hundreds of dental insurance companies that offer multiple plans. The plans change every year. It’s nearly impossible for us to keep track of every program, but we do our best.

We strive to work with patients with nearly every plan.

Before your visit, we will call your insurance company for you and find out how you can use your dental benefits in our office. If we learn that we can’t accept your insurance or that we can, but with some limitations, we will call you prior to your appointment.

We have many patients that choose to see us even though we don’t “accept” their insurance. The care we provide, for them, is worth the extra cost. The reason that we don’t accept every dental insurance plan is that some plan’s fees are so low that it would not allow us to provide long-lasting treatment that feels good and looks great in a kind, safe, and comfortable environment.

So, the best way to find out about your plan is to check the list below or call and give us the details, and we’ll find out for you.
